I Can’t Seem to Lose Weight on My Own: Can You Help?
If you feel like the weight loss game is rigged against you, you’re right. Restricting calories and doubling down on aerobic exercise stresses your body and triggers it to save calories, not burn them. Medical weight loss takes another approach.

You’ve been down this road countless times: You resolve to lose weight for health and aesthetic reasons. You find a diet and stick to it religiously. You hit the gym religiously, too.

The inches melt away! Success! You’re thrilled with your new figure and your vibrancy. Then, over time, without you noticing as it happens, those inches start to accumulate around your waist again. Your mood dampens. You feel sluggish.

What happened?

At Gorman Medical, PC, our medical experts, Fran Gorman, DNP, and Charles Ripp, MD, have witnessed countless patients blame themselves for their inability to lose weight and keep it off. But willpower isn’t really part of the equation for successful weight management.

That’s why we offer medically supervised weight loss and management at our offices in Colorado Springs and Cripple Creek, Colorado.

How can medical professionals help you finally transform your body composition? Read on to discover the benefits of medically supervised weight loss and management.

You may have underlying health issues

Did you know that medical conditions, such as hypothyroidism (i.e., low thyroid hormone), low levels of other hormones, diabetes, and other conditions may sabotage your weight loss efforts? One of the most advantageous parts of medically supervised weight loss is that we identify and address those issues.

In fact, if you don’t identify underlying conditions, you may choose an eating plan that’s completely wrong for your body. That’s why our weight loss programs begin with a physical examination and series of tests. If we determine you have a condition that needs treatment, we make sure that’s stabilized first.

We help you find a new way to eat

Nutritional deficiencies can sabotage your weight management. Often, weight gain is caused by calorie-rich, nutrient-poor foods, such as most convenience foods, ultra-processed foods, and fast foods. We may prescribe supplements as well as dietary changes to give your body more nourishment.

“Diets” don’t work partly because they’re not sustainable. If you jump onto the latest fad but can only stick to it until the point where you lose weight, it’s not going to do you any good in the long run. Instead, we help you find the foods that work with your body and which you find tasty so that you can continue to eat healthy, whole foods long after you’ve shed the excess weight.

We help you find a new way to move

Every Jan. 2, you hit the gym and the treadmill, trying to run off the excess weight and live up to your resolution. But did you know that too much cardiovascular exercise can actually stress your body and lead to weight retention or gain instead of loss?

Any time your body is under stress — whether it’s from calorie restriction (your body thinks it’s starving) or too much running (your body thinks it’s escaping from tigers) — it goes into survival mode. Part of survival mode is to retain every single calorie/ounce of fat it can.

High-intensity interval training (HIIT) is a much more effective way to get healthy and lose weight. Instead of running for an hour, you sprint for 30 seconds, rest for a few minutes, and then do it again a few more times. That’s it.

Your heart gets pumping. Your muscles get a workout. And then the stress is relieved.

Use your gym time for weight lifting instead. Or, if you’re not in shape enough for that yet, try resistance bands. Any kind of resistance exercise helps you build muscle. Muscle burns fat and keeps your metabolism steady.

We also help you find ways to incorporate more movement into your daily life. If you sit for your work, we encourage regular exercise “snacks.” Get up, stretch, walk around: Your body will thank you.

We can give you a boost

Natural weight loss may take many months before you see a dramatic change in your figure and energy levels. That can be discouraging. It’s also not healthy to keep on that excess weight.

Depending on your case, we may prescribe GLP1-agonists or other medications to help regulate your appetite and burn fat. We recommend only short-term use of these medications and will help you wean off of them as your lifestyle habits change.

We give you support

When you set a huge goal such as losing weight and keeping it off, it helps to have a team behind you. Not only do we work with you to set realistic goals, we cheer you on when your commitment flags, and cheer you outright as you reach each subgoal.
